Superpowers and smarts: Danielle Panabaker could be considered an expert on both. Currently starring on The Flash as Caitlin Snow, a brilliant, no-nonsense member of S.T.A.R. Labs—and, in real life, having graduated from high school at 14 (with valedictorian honors!)—she now takes on the role of Callie in Time Lapse, a sci-fi film about what happens when you know the future before anybody else. The 27-year-old Georgia native hopped on the phone with us to discuss dream superhero powers, favorite literature, and the cast member she mosts trust with her beloved dog.

1. In Time Lapse, three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24 hours in the future. If such a machine existed, what would you want it for more most: a) to know if you got a role b) to avoid traffic jams or c) to know which stores would have be having secret sales? “Probably C. I’m all about coupon codes and everything! I love Bloomingdales, and they have great sales!”

2. You follow a Twitter account called @HistoryInPics that features stunning photos of historical events. What historical time or event are you most fascinated by? “Probably ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s…I feel like so much changed in the country [then] for women. It’s also when some of my favorite literature [came out].”

3. If you could have one superhero power to make you better at one thing, what would it be? “It would probably be eating more vegetables because I have such a huge sweet tooth! I love cake and baked goods!”

4. You have a dog, Bella. Who from the cast of The Flash would you most trust to babysit her for a week? “Grant Gustin. He has two little white dogs of his own, so I don’t think he would notice if we added one more to the mix! [Laughs] I adore him. We have such a great relationship, and he has such a youthful spirit. He’s also extremely sensitive and sweet, and I appreciate that about him.”

5. One of your first roles was in Disney’s Stuck in the Suburbs. What American suburb is your favorite? “The suburb that my family lived in before we moved to Los Angeles, and that would be the suburb of Chicago called Naperville.”

6. You graduated from high school at 14 and were named valedictorian. Since you’re so smart, tell us the three more important lessons you learned from high school? “1) You have to make things work for yourself. I went to an independent study high school, so I had to make it work for me because of [TV and movie work]. 2) Also, don’t lose touch with your friends. Your social group can really shape you. Even though I went to an independent study high school, I still went to prom, so make it work for yourself. 3) One of my favorite books is called Stargirl (by Jerry Spinelli), and it’s about embracing who you are because there’s only one you out there and no one else like you. Stargirl is a really beautiful book about the story of a girl that marches to the beat of her own drummer. It’s OK to go your own path and not go with the herd.”

7. You’ve been on Grey’s Anatomy, Mad Men, and Law & Order: SVU. What show did you get most starstruck on? “It would definitely be Mad Men. I had never really watched Grey’s or SVU, but Mad Men I watched faithfully and diligently. Being on that set and around people that I respect so much was so great. I completely fell in love with John Slattery. He’s an amazing, lovely man.”

8. Your official website seems to have last been updated in 2007 and says “She does not have a page on My Space or Xanga, and does not post on message boards.” Was this all true? Could you ever imagine not having a Twitter or Instagram account now? “That was 1,000% true, and that website has not been updated in almost a decade. [Laughs] I have a healthy fear of social media. I definitely can see the advantages of it, but people can hide behind anonymity online. Instagram I enjoy, and I think I use that more socially than professionally.”

9. You also graduated from UCLA at 19 with a degree in English. What is your favorite book you’ve ever read and why? “I always go back to Stargirl, but I also love contemporary American fiction, like Fitzgerald and Hemingway and J.D. Salinger, and all of those. I don’t know if I can pick a favorite though! Recently, I read Steve Jobs’ autobiography and also Candy Girl about Diablo Cody, and I really enjoyed that. She’s an incredibly talented woman and author.”

10. You consider yourself a foodie. What food are you an expert on, and where do you go to get it? “I love Italian food and have a list of my favorite places in Los Angeles and Vancouver. In L.A., I love Jon and Vinny’s. Their pizza is incredible. And Bestia in Downtown L.A., but you have to make a reservation like three weeks out. Then in Vancouver, my favorite Italian place is this little pizza and pasta place called Nook. It’s also connected to another Italian restaurant called Tavola, which is also delicious.”

Time Lapse is in theaters and on VOD today. The Flash‘s season finale is Tuesday, May 19.
