A Las Vegas coroner has determined that blues great B.B. King died after suffering a series of small strokes. King, 89, passed away in the city on Thursday night just two weeks after he was hospitalized following a small stroke.

His doctor, Darin Brimhall, confirmed King’s strokes were related to his diabetes. The cause of death was multi-infarct dementia.

King influenced several generations of rock musicians and blues players, including Eric Clapton, John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

The blues man continued to tour until just shortly before the announcement was made regarding his health, with his beloved guitar Lucille by his side.

King has been awarded with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
