As Daphne, Callie’s enemy turned friend on ABC Family’s The Fosters, Daffany Clark has been part of one of the most progressive and heartwarming shows on television. It’s no surprise that she’s thoughtful and warm off-camera, too.

We caught up with Daffany recently to talk about her experience portraying Daphne and how The Fosters has had a positive impact on her life.

“The show is great; every time I watch it, I cry,” she enthused. “It just pulls at your heartstrings. That’s what I love about it.”

Whether it’s the depiction of a lesbian couple on basic cable television, or its portrayal of the foster care system, or any of the issues it’s addressed in its two seasons, The Fosters has been hailed as one of the most groundbreaking shows on television, and Daffany is glad to be associated with it.

“Considering that I was in the pilot episode, and I had no idea that they were going to be bring me back a year later, I didn’t realize how impactful the show was going to be,” Daffany explained. “But I’m very proud that the show is so diverse and it deals with so many societal issues.

“I am so mindful when I go to set…because to be honest at the end of the day this is all stuff that people can relate to and sympathize with. I always have that at the back of my mind,” she continued. “I think it’s opened a lot of doors for other shows to be as diverse as we are.

“For me, I know what it’s like to be a part of the foster system and I’m biracial. I’m very proud to be a part of the show.”

What stands out for her from the series so far? “My favorite moments or my favorite episodes would be with my daughter, Tasha. I have a two-year-old daughter in foster care that I’m trying to get back,” she explained.
