Neil Patrick Harris hosted the Oscars for the first time on Sunday night after four successful runs as the host of the Tonys and a pair of Emmy hosting gigs.

So how did he do?

The three-plus-hour show had its share of ups and downs, with many of the ups being while Harris was off stage, and many of the downs being the tired old jokes he told. Some of them were good, but many fell flat and others were ill-timed.

By the end of the show, a briefcase full of his predictions for the show was opened and he rushed through it, presumably because by that time nobody seemed to care.

Case in point (no pun intended), Harris tasked Oscar winner Octavia Spencer with the job of keeping her eyes on the case for the entire evening from her seat in the audience to make sure no one messed with it.

Spencer was seated next to Oscar-nominee Robert Duvall, who just stared back at the host when asked if he’d been keeping an Spencer, who was supposed to be keeping an eye on the case. The moment was similar to Tommy Lee Jones’ look at the 2013 Golden Globes during Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig’s not funny presentation of the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical award.
