Well, this is certainly not how we wanted to start off our Memorial Day weekend. Full House (and Fuller House) executive producer Robert L. Boyett gave an exclusive statement to The Hollywood Reporter late Friday afternoon explaining that twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will not be returning to their role as Michelle Tanner in the upcoming Netflix series.

Update: For John Stamos’ reaction to the news, see below.

“Although Ashley and Mary-Kate will not be a part of Fuller House, I know how much Full House has meant to them, and they are still very much considered family. It has been exciting to see how they have built their professional careers, and I support their choice to focus on their fashion brands and various business endeavors,” Boyett said in a statement to THR.

Interestingly enough though, Boyett’s statement makes no reference to the reunion episode that will kick off the series. So is it still possible that Mary-Kate or Ashley might return for that standalone episode? As of right now, no one is saying. The series, though, will center around Candace Cameron Bure’s D.J. Tanner, now a widow raising young children. Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibler) are already confirmed, with John Stamos producing (and reprising his role as Uncle Jesse). Talks with the remaining cast members are still under way. Production is expected to begin in July.

Update: John Stamos sent out a series of tweets after the news broke this evening, followed by a more in-depth Facebook post.

Stamos also retweeted the below tweet he received from a fan:

Then around 11:30 ET on Friday, Stamos posted the following on his Facebook page:

“Just so you reporters know – this is not a money gig for any of us- quite the opposite – we want to give the fans what they deserve for supporting us for so many years- we all just want to have fun – do it in a classy way on netflix and have a good time- sad that a few don’t share the rest of the cast’s opinion – i can only wish them the best – JS”

Are you upset that Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen won’t be on Fuller House, and what do you think about John Stamos’ comments?
