Warning: Major Finale Spoilers Ahead! The Mindy Project did what it does best with its fourth season finale, leaving viewers clamoring for more, and dying to know what happens next. Mindy and Danny got caught in an elevator, made out to some sexy music, and then got busy on the elevator floor. Meanwhile, Jody—feeling bad for lying to Mindy about his chlamydia—was closing a deal to purchase the upstairs condo in Mindy’s building so little Leo wouldn’t have to live in a closet anymore. The next morning, after Danny and Mindy were released form the confines of their makeshift bedroom, Danny walked Mindy home, where they both said “I love you.” OK, so far so good, except, for the small fact that Danny’s engaged to someone else and Mindy doesn’t know about it yet. Fast-forward a few minutes later, and there’s Jody, standing in Mindy’s condo, telling her that he’s bought prime New York City property for her and Leo. Oh, and that he’s also in love with her. Got that? But that’s not all. To complicate things even more, Danny and Sarah’s wedding invitation was seen sitting unopened on Mindy’s kitchen counter. So, yes, you could say we’re in a bit of a pickle here.

“Mindy is going to have a huge reaction to [Danny’s engagement to Sarah],” says executive producer Matt Warburton about what’s to come in season five. “This is hitting her where it hurts.” It’s also hitting the audience where it hurts. After years of Mindy’s dating trials and tribulations, you’d be hard pressed to find a more passionate fan base than the one rooting for Mindy and Danny. So when Danny turned into the worst version of himself and the two split, audiences felt the brunt of it. If anything, they took it harder than Dr. Lahiri herself, who seemed to move on rather effortlessly. That was, until the elevator scene, when viewers got to see just how hard the last few months have been on Mindy, who kept her distance from Danny in an effort to protect herself. Danny, unable to deal with the error of his ways, immediately jumped back into the dating scene looking for any Band-Aid to cover things up. And now? Well, now, we’re at a real conundrum, because both men fighting for Mindy’s heart have been dishonest over some pretty big things.

“Obviously Mindy has a really big decision to make,” says Warburton. “I think people will be surprised and very intrigued by what that decision actually is. We put her in a real corner, and next season, I think we’ve found a really interesting way to get her out of it that leads to a bunch of stuff. Danny has—one way or the other, no matter what happens—a new person in his life, who is a real threat to, you know, the status quo. There’s no way for Mindy to get out of the corner we painted her into without having to deal with it. I think a lot of next season will be explaining the fallout of what happens in these episodes.”

Until season five premieres (October 4, FYI), Warburton gave us a bit more insight into what it was like filming the finale, who might be the last man standing, and how the series might eventually end.

Glamour: The scenes with Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling in the elevator are just magic. What was it like being on set when the two of them are together again?

Matt Warburton: It has the dynamic of a great stage play. The set was so small, and it was so beautiful and we’re deliberately picking up on one of the ultimate romantic cliches—two people stuck together in a room. What I thought was cool was that you just forget all of that when it’s just the two of them. We know the audience wants to know what happens when the two of them are forced to spend the night together in an elevator, and they also have so many questions, like, ‘What is Danny even doing? What’s going on?’ We’re showing these two characters catching up, but you’re also dealing with these two actors catching up with each other, and I think you an see that on-screen.

Glamour: Are we building towards a love triangle with Jody/Mindy/Danny next season?

Matt: I don’t know if triangle is the right shape to describe the relationship. It’s a little early to say for next season, but next season we are definitely going to solve the conundrum that she’s stuck in in the finale. Very quickly. And it’s fun to throw forward from that decision, and I think it’s going to surprise people in a really nice way.

Glamour: Will there be a time jump going into next season?

Matt: Because we’re ending on a real cliffhanger, we’re going to come back…the audience is going to want to see these events play out in real time, so we’re not quite jumping, I would say.

Glamour: Have you and Mindy discussed how you’d like the series to end one day? Some showrunners have said they plan these things out from day one. Others say they can barely see past next month.

Matt: I think that it’s one of those things—anybody who tells you at the beginning of a show that they have the end in mind, I don’t believe that. That would be weird. It’s such a living, breathing thing—a TV show—that you need to see what you like, what the audience likes, and everything. As your show goes on, I think the possibilities narrow a little bit, for sure, and I think that the only place that the ending [of] the show exists is inside Mindy Kaling’s head. And she sometimes will talk about it a little bit, sometimes she’ll keep quiet about it, but I think she knows better than anybody how important the ending of a show like this is. And so, as for the timing, I think it’s something she takes incredibly seriously, and she thinks about it all the time. I think she’s ultimately the only person that can really answer that question. I’m excited to find out too. We’ve talked about it, but we’re having so much fun with where the characters are now, we have plenty of other stuff to worry about! [Laughs]

Glamour: I hope you don’t take offense to that question, because I want the show around for a long time!

Matt: No, not at all, and we do talk about it, because where you’re going depends on where you’re headed, and where you’re headed is where we are right now, so we have to think about both of those things at the same time.

The Mindy Project‘s fifth season premieres on Hulu on Tuesday, October 4.
