Madonna unveiled a short film called Her-Story in honor of International Women’s Day on Wednesday. Photographers Luigi and Iango teamed with Vogue Germany to make the stylish film, which the pop icon revealed on Facebook and captioned as “a film dedicated to all women who fight for freedom!”

The clip opens with a voiceover from the pop artist. “Welcome to the revolution of love, to our refusal as women to accept this new age of tyranny,” she states. “Where not just women are in danger, but all marginalized people, where being uniquely different might truly be considered a crime. The revolution starts here.”

Unfolding in eight chapters, the black-and-white visuals depict the singer confidently strolling with two dogs down an alley like a mob boss dressed in authoritative garb as she surveys the territory. She’s later joined by a posse of equally defiant-looking women. Other scenes feature emotive interpretive dancing and religious imagery contrasted against oppressive backdrops. Soon, the pop icon appears with wings rising above the fray.

A banner reads “We should all be feminists” and the film ends with the message “Women’s rights are human rights.”

The video features songs from composer David Chalmin, Madonna (“Virgin Mary”) and Libby Larkin (“Billy Goat”), who also appears and sings in the film.

Madonna also teamed with Beyoncé, Coldplay, John Legend and other artists to sign an open letter for gender equality to mark International Women’s Day.
